A youth election has seen four budding politicians win seats at the UK Youth Parliament.
Lukas Colledge and Mohammed Mamsa from Nuneaton, Dave Penson and Kate Crosson from Stratford area were elected as the county’s new Members of UK Youth Parliament (MYPs) on February 28.
Their four elected deputies are Jake Weaver and Kira Mushing from Rugby, Glen Morgan from Nuneaton and Josh Ellis from Stratford.
This year there were 49 Warwickshire youngsters contesting to be Members of UK Youth Parliament and VOX - the County Youth Panel.
14,554 votes were cast during the elections at schools, colleges and youth centres so 34.3 per cent of the young population aged 13-19 who were eligible to vote took part in this year’s elections.
During their term of office, the youngsters will represent the views and interests of young people in their constituency, both locally and nationally, by meeting councillors, MPs and other decision makers to take forward issues of local importance.
The MYP elections took place alongside elections for VOX, the county’s youth council, which saw 15 successful candidates from around Warwickshire take seats. The panel will represent the voice of youth by addressing issues affecting young people on a county level.
The youth elections are coordinated by Warwickshire County Council’s Targeted Youth Support Service. Head of Service, Hugh Disley outlined why they are so important. He said: “We take youth elections very seriously in Warwickshire and rely on the young council members to bring the voice of
young people to many areas of council business.
“The fantastic work of our MYPs has gained us a national reputation and I’m sure the newly elected members will follow in their predecessors’ footsteps to bring important youth issues to the fore in high profile discussions.
“I think it is important to acknowledge all the young people who ran for election and voted in this process. I would urge the candidates who haven’t been successful on this occasion not to give up, to take all opportunities to engage with their communities, and continue to engage with the political process.”
The results of the youth election were announced by Warwickshire County Councillor Cllr Heather Timms, Portfolio Holder for Children, Young People and Families atan event held in the council chamber at Warwickshire County Council.
Cllr Timms said: “Well done to the newly elected young politicians, I look forward to getting to know them over the next year as they work with the council and Cabinet to influence decision making.
“I’m sure they will replicate the high standard of work completed by the outgoing council members by continuing to raise awareness of the issues facing young people today.
“It is so encouraging to see our young people actively engaged in this process and I would like to thank everyone involved for their enthusiastic participation.”
