RUGBY residents who have helped brighten up the environment will this month be collecting awards and prizes at a presentation evening in the town.

The Rugby in Bloom awards presentation will take place at Blooms Rugby Garden Centre on Straight Mile in Bourton-on-Dunsmore on Wednesday, September 14 from 7pm until 9pm.

Carole Berry, Manager of Blooms Rugby Garden Centre, said: “We are delighted to be hosting the awards ceremony at the garden centre. This year is the 22nd anniversary of Rugby in Bloom and we’re thrilled to be part of it. This will be the fifth year that we have provided the venue for the presentation evening.

“The guest speaker at the awards presentation will be gardening expert, Bob Flowerdew, who has appeared on numerous television and radio programmes.”

The Mayor of Rugby, Councillor Gwen Hotten will also be present during the evening.

Carole added: “Rugby in Bloom is organised by Rugby Borough Council and every year invites entries into the competition from schools, voluntary organisations, businesses and local residents. The theme for the 2011 awards is promoting a clean and green environment.

“The campaign relies heavily on local business support and Rugby Borough Council are extremely grateful for all the backing they receive.”

Judging categories include floral container, allotments, small and large gardens, pubs and hotels, shops, schools, environmental and community entries.

The first place winners will receive a £20 garden centre gift card, a trophy and a certificate. Runners-up and third place winners will also receive a garden centre gift card and a certificate.

The amount given in garden centre vouchers for second and third place winners will depend on the categories entered.

Carole added: “Music will be provided by local live band Citizens of Swing and the PA equipment will be provided by Sounds of Rugby, a musical instrument retailer in the town. Blooms Rugby Garden Centre will also be providing a buffet for the guests during the evening.”
