A woman with one kidney is in training for the Virgin London Marathon to help others.

Abby Diston, 23, will take part in the 26-mile event to raise funds and awareness for Kidney Research.

I have always wanted to take part in the marathon and only having one kidney made choosing the charity easy

She said: “This charity is close to my heart as I only have one kidney myself.

“I was born with just one, but didn’t find out until I was 15. I am, however, lucky that ‘Mr Kid’ as he’s known among my family and friends, is doing a good job all by himself.”

She says not everyone with kidney conditions is so lucky.

“I do understand that this isn’t the case for many,” said Abby.

“The kidneys have a very important job and if this isn’t fulfilled, it can lead to dialysis or even transplants needed. I don’t have any problems, but I do watch my alcohol intake.”

Abby’s fundraising goal is £2,000.

“I have always wanted to take part in the marathon and only having one kidney made choosing the charity easy.”

She is hoping to kick start her fundraising with a fair at the Railway Club, Hillmorton Road, on April 6, from noon to 4pm.

Abby, who praised mum Mandy and partner Charlie for their support, said: “I still have a few tables available if anyone is interested, but most of all I want people to come down, have fun and help me raise money for an amazing cause. Every penny raised helps, so please dig deep.”
