A Rugby singer said it ‘meant the world to him’ and his Kingsland Road bandmates to receive such positive comments from the panel of judges in week one of the live shows.

Joe Conaboy - known as Connor - from Rugby performed live in front of millions of people on Saturday night in week one of the X Factor live shows after making it down to the final 12 acts in the competition.

Ahead of their performance mentor Gary Barlow said: “I loved Kingsland Road straight away. They reminded me so much of when I started.”

Connor, who grew up in Rugby and went to Bilton school, said: “We are enjoying this so much. I don’t think any of us want this to end any time soon.”

Gary added: “I’ve picked them an amazing 80s song and if they can pull this off I think they could steal the show,”

Kingsland Road - featuring Josh, Connor, Thompson, Matt and Jay - took to the stage to perform I’m Your Man by Wham!

After the performance, Nicole Scherzinger said: “Boys, I’m not going to lie - I was impressed. I was very impressed with that performance. I didn’t know where that came from.”

Louis Walsh said: “Kingsland Road I loved you from the very first audition and I know you’re working really hard behind the scenes. That really worked - the song choice, the image, the choreography. You’ve got great energy guys and that’s what the show is all about.

“If you’re having a good time then we’re having a good time. You’re going to go far.”

Sharon Osbourne, who said Connor looks like Leonardo DiCaprio, agreed with Louis that the boys would go an ‘awful long way’.

She added: “You’ve got great energy and great atmosphere that you’ve brought to the room here.

“Really fantastic. Really well done.”

Gary Barlow, who announced live on the show that this series would be his last, said: “I’m so pleased for you that all the hard work has paid off. There’s nothing out there like you at the moment.

“You’re new, you’re original and this will be the performance that everybody is looking forward to every week.”

Speaking to presenter Dermot O’Leary afterwards about the positive feedback, Connor said: “We never thought that was going to happen in week one. We’ve worked our bums off to do this and it means the world that you’ve given us such amazing comments.

“We were so nervous. It’s such a massive song. We wanted to put our own twist on it and hope you all enjoyed it.”
