RUGBY will get a rare taste of grand opera next week when Carmen is performed at the Temple Speech Rooms.
It’s being put on by Random Opera Company, which is based in the town. Its singers will be joined by the Rugby Philharmonic Choir and pupils from Avon Valley School.
Random Opera’s general director Richard Jones said: “So far as I can tell, there hasn’t been any grand opera performed in Rugby in living memory - so this is a great chance for people to get a taste of it.
“Some think opera is elitist, and it certainly isn’t always immediately accessible. But Carmen is all about sex and death. It’s like a soap opera, but more dramatic.”
The opera will be performed with no set or scenery, but that won’t detract from the theatricality, according to Richard. He said: “The principal parts will be acted - it won’t just be people standing there with books. The audience won’t be disappointed!”
Bizet’s Carmen will be performed in the Temple Speech Room at Rugby School on Saturday July 7. Adult tickets cost £12. Call (01788) 812802.
