MORE smokers than ever in Rugby are stubbing out their cigarettes for good.

Warwickshire Stop Smoking Service says it has helped more than 3,700 people in the county stop smoking in the past year - the highest rate since the service began in 2000.

In the Rugby area, out of the 2,500 who stopped, 1,225 were still off the cigarettes four weeks later.

Of the 7,606 people who used the service in the 2010/11 financial year 3,760 were still not smoking after four weeks.

The service operates out of GP surgeries and pharmacies across and offers a range of treatments.

Smoking cessation manager Jane Wright said: “If you are a smoker, becoming smoke free is the single best thing you can do in terms of improving health and wellbeing and adding years to your life.
