Police are advising Rugby residents to be aware recent scam phone calls.

Several people have received calls from an automated message saying they owe money to HMRC Inland Revenue, and they should press a key for more details.

A spokesman for Warwickshire Police said: “This is a scam and HMRC, banks and the police would never ring people in this manner or ask for personal or bank details over the phone.

“If you receive a call of this type, we would advise that you hang up immediately and report it on 101 using another phone. In an emergency or if a crime is in progress call 999.

“If you have elderly friends or relatives who may be vulnerable to this scam, please talk to them and make them aware.”

Victims can also report it to Action Fraud via their website or on 0300 123 2040.
