A RUGBY woman will spend Christmas in prison after repeatedly failing to pay her council tax.
Magistrates in Nuneaton heard that Margaret Treslove, of Eskdale, Rugby had been given a suspended sentence at a previous court hearing and she ordered to pay a weekly amount to clear council tax arrears of £1,789.11.
However Treslove, 45, failed to make the payments and she was ordered back to court, where she was given a 28 day prison sentence.
Cllr David Wright, portfolio holder for resources at Rugby Borough Council, said: “The council understands these are difficult times for people and we will do everything we can to help residents who are struggling to pay their bills.
“However, we owe it those that do pay council tax to make sure those who refuse to pay are brought before the courts and dealt with appropriately.”
