NEARLY 5,000 new jobs could be created over the next 18 years if Rugby's masterplan gets the go ahead.

The key areas will be around the proposed sites for new homes - the mast site and the fields south of the M6.

The former mast site is expected to create 2,800 jobs, while developers hope to bring a further 1,800 jobs to the area near Coton Meadows.

The majority of the jobs are hoped to be manufacturing based.

It is hoped that the forthcoming £35m college in Leicester Road and power academy, which will help develop new green energy sources, will act as a springboard for more specialist manufacturers to move to Rugby. Many jobs will be in the logistics industry.

Cllr. Neil Campbell, Cabinet Member for Economy, Development and Culture, said: "We have aspirations of increasing quality employment."
