BOWLS: County Ladies host Welsh visitors

An English Country Garden...

Well, not a garden exactly but what can be better on a summer afternoon than playing bowls in the heart of Stratford on the banks of the River Avon surrounded by church spires, green hedgerows and the world renowned Theatre?

Avon Bowling Club was the venue for Warwickshire’s annual friendly match against the Welsh Team – Pen-Y-Glyn and although the visitors weren’t very friendly and beat the home team 96-72, the afternoon was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. The Avon members were especially enthusiastic about this opportunity to host a county game and went out of their way to ensure that everything was perfect. Even the weather managed to be kind for half the game which was an improvement on most of our matches this year.

Highest winning rink went to Pat Gagg (Lillington) with Pat Cooper (RLS) and Jean Petty (Norgren) who were on a roll from the start and eventually won 19-7.

The only other winning rink went to Ann Harwood (Wolvey) with Margaret Boldy (Avon) and Pat Dahlgren (Bilton) who were 3 all at 6 ends but managed to pull away to finish 14-9.

Sue Hornsby (Lillington) with Karen Rice (Entaco) and Mo Yeomans (Blossomfield) who were fairly even at 5-6 on 10 ends, but weren’t able to hold the opposition finishing 9-15.

Maureen Edwards (Rugby Thornfield), Dawn Horne (RLS) and Dorothy Manson (Avon) started slowly and despite a determined effort were unable to pull back eventually losing 11-20.

Chris Cooke with Heather Tredgold (both Southam) with Margaret Andrew (Entaco) started confidently but were to be denied the opportunity to score much after the first few ends and finally finished 9-22.

Pat Bax (Rugby Ladies), with Carole Cox (Snitterfield) and Barbara Jeffrey (Entaco) had a similar fate eventually losing 10-23.

After a very nice tea County President, Di Medhurst, was delighted to be able to present blazer badges to Dawn Horne (RLS) and Heather Tredgold (Southam).
