Senior Knock-Out Cup Final
Merchants Inn v Wolston
There is an unfamiliar name on the Brethertons Cup this year, after the Merchants Inn CC produced a dominant display in Sunday’s final to power past Wolston and lift the silverware.
Wolston won the toss and elected to field first, but the pub-goers were more than happy to make first use of a fine batting surface provided by Barby’s ground staff.
Owen Edwards was soon into his stride for the Merchants, finding the boundary regularly, but Wolston struck back with two quick wickets.
Dave Watson (16) supported Edwards as he powered his way to 89, including nine fours and five maximums, before he was finally caught in the 15th over.
The Merchants’ lower order played sensible, busy cricket in the final overs to secure a very competitive total of 155-7 from their 20 overs.
Wolston’s run chase began positively with Phil Edmunds playing well, but two wickets to the impressive Tom Middleton put his side on top.
The village side’s key man Dave Edmunds attempted to wrestle back the momentum but, when he was well caught by Chris Evans off Trent Rollins’ bowling, his side were in big trouble.
The pub side, who like to call themselves ‘the Real MCC’, were not going to let Wolston off the hook and spinner Tom Wilkins bowled a fine spell.
It was then over to Rob Stipanovic and John Linnell to share the final three wickets, with the Merchants’ skipper Scott Whyment fittingly taking the final catch to secure victory for his side.
