Beaten by Bablake
Warwickshire Division 11 East
Newbold v Bablake Old Boys 4ths
Newbold 161 all out (5 points)
Bablake 163 for 7 (20 points)
The teams arrived to a well-prepared grass wicket with both teams needing a win. The toss again didn’t go Newbold’s way and Newbold were put into bat. Veteran Henry Neal and Mick Smith started to the anchor innings but Smith swiftly returned to the pavilion after mistiming a good straight ball.
The in-form skipper Richard Meacham then came to the crease, made things look very easy and made a respectable 36 before getting over confident and playing a lazy shot and getting caught. Batsmen then came and went, Bruce Virdee 26, Tom Dell 15 and other batsmen chipping in here and there bringing Newbold’s innings to a close on 161 all out.
After tea Newbold took the field thinking they had set a decent total that was very defendable on a wicket that favoured the bowling side. Sam Letts and Tom Dell opened the bowling keeping thigs fairly tight and creating chances.
Two dropped catches and a plum LBW not given forced the skipper into a bowling change. Moneeb Razaq knocked at the door creating good chances that were swallowed by Dan Siddons and Richard Meacham leaving Razaq with 3 wickets. Dave Cheney came on the River end and maintained his consistent prowess taking a few wickets for not many runs.
Newbold then took a few more wickets and with Bablake under pressure the game looked to be going Newbold’s way. Dropping 10 divisions the Premier Divison Bablake skipper arrived to the crease and knocked off the runs comfortably against a mixture of Newbold bowlers winning the game for Bablake. Another near miss for Newbold.
