Warwickshire Division 11 East

Newbold 225 for 4 (20 points)

Standard 224 for 7 (5 points)

The in-form Standard travelled to Newbold trying to maintain their top spot in the league. Newbold had a youthful and energetic team selected for the game, encouraging captain Tom Dell to bowl first on a well prepared wicket. The vital toss went Newbold’s way and allowed them to use a strong bowling attack.

With strike bowlers Sam Letts and Moneeb Razaq opening the bowling Newbold set to work, knowing it was a hard afternoon in the warm heat.

Neither bowlers had any luck against their opening batsmen as they used the pace on the ball to glide it through the quick outfield for early boundary’s.

The skipper decided a bowling change was in order after 10 overs. Tom Dell came on and took the pace off the ball which allowed him to get a few quick wickets which built the pressure of Standard.

Dave Cheney came on from the other end and slowed standards scoring down with a very accurate bowling spell going for very little runs. New bowler Robert Bellamy came on and took a quick wickets for the second week running. Sam Letts finished the innings taking two wickets with the change of pace working to Newbold’s advantage again.

Newbold restricted Standard to a very respectable 224 for 7 off their 45 overs.

After tea Newbold had a chat and set to work on the run chase. In form Tom Dell and Bruce Virdee opened the batting. Bruce fell quickly to a catch in the slips from a thick edge. Top run scorer Richard Meacham came to the crease. Dell then fell shortly after chopping onto his stumps. Meacham and Dan Siddons stuck around until drinks when Newbold were 130 for 2 off 22.

Siddons then fell LBW for 29 a few overs after drink. Meacham fell in the next few overs after playing another bad lazy shot falling for 87 needing 70 to win. Haseeb Razaq and Pritpal Virdee then steadied newbold to the first victory in a few weeks in 38 overs. Virdee finishing 29 not out and Razaq finishing 25 not out.

A good batting performance won the game for Newbold.
