Tight at top of division
Warwickshire Cricket League Division 1 2nd XI
Rugby CC 2nd XI 222 for 8 drew with Knowle Village CC 2nd XI 177 for 7
A winning draw sees Rugby in 6th place in the league with only 13 points dividing the top half of the table. Stand-in Skipper Hugh Cochrane won the toss and chose to bat first, with Chris Evans and Tom Binding working hard to post 54 in 14 overs before Evans was caught at gully for 34. Alex Smith (22) joined Binding and the two added a busy 56 in 15 overs to leave Rugby 109 for 2 from 29 overs. Hugh Cochrane (12) was caught at midwicket, and Mo Sadiq was caught at gully second ball from one that popped.
Gynn Tapp looked in great form until being bowled for 12, and Rubans Sugatharubans whacked a four and a six in a cameo 17. Four wickets had fallen in seven overs but Tom Binding was solid at the other end as he played an excellent innings that made sure Rugby batted all of their 50 overs. Binding had made 59 in 40 overs with eight boundaries when he was bowled by the useful Omar Zaman (14-1-55-5). Rugby still had work to do at 159 for 6 from 42 overs, and this was accomplished by another dashing innings from Akram Ullah, who smashed five fours in a rapid 39 that allowed the town to make a competitive 222.
In reply Knowle progressed steadily to 28 without loss until Matt Hinks had opener Langford caught behind for 16. Rubans Sugatharubans (14-5-32-2) bowled great lines uphill and Mo Sadiq (10-1-18-1) was miserly as the visitors crawled to 58 for 4 after 25 overs. After drinks, however, Knowle decided to have a go at the six an over that a win demanded, and Skipper Sam Stafford thrashed some big boundaries as Knowle scored 49 in the next five overs. Matt Hinks (15-2-35-4) was recalled to the attack and removed Stafford for 48 and Zaman for 42 to end the run chase and see Knowle block out the final ten overs to earn a third batting point.
