Tamworth tie on Tuesday
Having ended 2013 in style with a 5-1 drubbing of North Greenford at the weekend, Rugby Town are enjoying a deserved week’s rest ahead of this Saturday’s home game against Aylesbury United.
The Greenford win came on the back of the excellent Boxing Day victory over Daventry at Butlin Road, and in both games Valley came from behind to secure the maximum return – proving that whilst they may be light on fit and available bodies at the moment, there is no such shortage in Dave Stringer’s squad when it comes to spirit.
Mid-table Aylesbury visit Rugby for the first time in eight years, and the Ducks will be looking to avenge for an opening day of the season 2-0 defeat in the reverse fixture, when Town’s Seb Lake-Gaskin and David Kolodynski were on target.
Lake-Gaskin missed the trip to Middlesex last Saturday through illness, whilst his strike partner Kolodynski was notching another Valley hat-trick – following up on his Daventry double.
Recent signing from St.Ives Jared Cunniff was also on-target twice on his debut at Greenford, with another new face Nathan Fox starting both Christmas fixtures.
21-year-old Fox is a left-back/midfielder who played for Notts. County in the Football League, before subsequently featuring for Corby and Kettering over the past couple of seasons.
Town are also at home next Tuesday evening, when Conference Premier Tamworth will send a side to compete in the 2nd round of the Birmingham Senior Cup.
Rugby’s opening round victory over Redditch three months ago earned them the right to face the Lambs – who are managed by ex-Valley keeper Dale Belford.
Belford featured for the club in 1988, and Tuesday’s game is the first time the two sides have met since December 1999, when Tamworth beat Rugby 5-2 - ironically in the same stage of the same Senior Cup competition.
