From victory over champions on Monday to defeat by bottom side
After their 3-0 triumph over the league champions last week, Rugby Town came back to earth with an almighty bump, losing 1-0 to relegated AFC Hayes on Saturday.
Belying their lowly league position, Hayes were a strong side, looking nothing like a team which had only managed seven wins all season. Rugby were also disrupted by the loss of both forwards to sickness in the first half.
The home side’s 40th-minute goal was enough to give them the three points and leave Rugby’s play-off campaign in a precarious position.
With just two games to play, away against struggling Daventry Town this weekend and at home to second-placed Royston on the 25th, Valley are currently fifth, in the final play-off spot, on 73 points.
Royston have 80 points, third-placed Aylesbury 78 while Bedworth in fourth are on 75 and with a game in hand. Sixth in the league, Barton Rovers are just a point behind Rugby on 72 and Hanwell in seventh spot on 68.
