Promotion chasers suffer 1-0 home defeat by team 14th in league

After seven wins in a row, a poor performance from Rugby Town at Butlin Road on Saturday, in front of a 288-strong crowd, saw them lose 1-0 to Aylesbury United.

The visitors scored early in the second half and Valley couldn’t find a way back.

Rugby remain fourth in the Evostik Southern League Central Division One table on 53 points from 29 games, helped by fifth placed Hanwell (52 from 28) losing to Northwood. Leaders Kettering (61 from 27) beat Potters Bar 3-1, second placed Bedworth (61 from 29) beat Chalfont St Peter and third place Aylesbury (59 from 29) beat Uxbridge.

Tomorrow evening (Tuesday) Rugby Town host premier division side Corby in the Red Insure Cup.
