One game left and season’s destiny out of Rugby’s hands

Two goals in the last ten minutes saw the Daventry jinx strike again in yet another defeat at Communications Park. Valley went down 2-0 to their struggling hosts, who are 18th in the league, and so have slipped out of the play-off zone into sixth spot.

After the excellence of their 3-0 victory over champions Kettering, last week’s defeat by relegated AFC Hayes and Saturday’s local derby disappointment have left a play-off spot looking far less hopeful.

Next weekend, in the final fixture, Valley host second placed Royston Town at Butlin Road. Aylesbury are third, with Barton Rovers and Bedworth United in fourth and fifth, level on 75 points, although Bedworth still have a game in hand. Rugby are two points behind on 73.

Even if Dave Stringer’s men win their last game, their play-off fate depends on other results going in Rugby’s favour.

On Saturday Barton play Aylesbury United (currently 13th in the table) and Bedworth’s last two games are against Northwood (in 10th) and Egham (15th).
