Leamington and Brackley visit this week
Rugby Town maintained their 100% pre-season record with an impressive victory against higher level opposition on the Butlin Road astroturf pitch on Monday.
Barwell were the latest side to be dispatched by Dave Stringer’s side, with Valley recording a 4-1 success against a near full-strength NPL Premier Division outfit.
However, Town have as yet been unable to get valuable practice time on a grass surface after their latest two friendlies against Solihull Moors and Nuneaton were cancelled due to concerns about the condition of the main Butlin Road pitch.
The unusually long stretch of hot weather and lack of rain has meant that the grass in the goalmouths in particular has not grown as expected, and with an eye on the long season ahead, the club decided to protect the playing surface – with Barwell therefore stepping in at late notice.
Midfielder Sam Youngs opened the scoring on Monday, following up on his own missed penalty, before David Kolodynski capitalised on a poor defensive back-header to notch an eighth goal of the warm-up campaign.
Seb Lake-Gaskin’s half-volley extended the lead further, before the Leicestershire side pulled one back. One of a number of Rugby trialists then restored the three goal advantage though, with a spectacular late strike.
Even more to their credit, Valley achieved the win without the contribution of potential first choice players Niall Cooper, Ellis Myles, Andrew Spencer, Richard Blythe and Lewis McBride, and boss Stringer was understandably satisfied with the form and progress of his charges after the game.
The club are hoping that the forecasted rain this week provides the necessary stimulation to the pitch’s affected areas and they are able to welcome two Conference North sides - Leamington (Friday 26th) and Brackley (Tuesday) – to the ground.
# Both pre-season friendlies are scheduled to kick-off at 7.30pm, with admission at £5 for adults and £3 for concessions. For the latest information regarding Town’s pre-season schedule, check out the club’s website at www.rugbytownfc.com
