College minor girls win county crown

Princethorpe College’s Cross Country Teams were on fire despite the horrendous running conditions at Hatton Country Park on Saturday.

Freezing temperatures coupled with driving sleet made the undulating course for the Warwickshire Schools Cross County Championships treacherous in places.

Not to be out done by the elements the Minor Girls’ Team (Year 7) were crowned County Champions over the 2000 metre course.

Leading the way was Eugenia Bessey. The 11-year-old held her position and ran a well paced, strong race to come in third overall. Just behind her in seventh place was Heather Croghan- Miksch. Despite taking a nasty fall in the latter stages of the race Mollie Dibb came in in ninth with team mate Millie Higgins completing the quartet coming home in 12th.

The Minor Boys also enjoyed well-earned top positions. Matthew Rush dug deep to finish seventh with Robert Lord just behind in ninth and Tom Warne hot on his heels in tenth.

In the Senior Boys’ Race over 4600 metres Harry Hughes just missed out on a top three medal coming in fourth place whilst Year 9s Ella Bromley, in the Junior Girls’ 2600 metre race, came home in a terrific third.

With Princethorpe boasting nine top 12 finishers Director of Sport Mr Neil McCollin was full of praise.

“We’re especially pleased with the Minor Girls’ result,” he said. “The strength of talent there is great to see. The conditions were as bad as they can get and all our athletes showed real guts and high fitness levels.”
