UK Masters Athletics Multi Events Championships 2014
The UK Masters Athletics Multi Events Championships 2014 were held in Birmingham at the weekend. The event includes the decathlon, heptathlon and throws pentathlon across all of the age groups and a number of Rugby & Northampton AC athletes took part with a great deal of success.
In the throws pentathlon, athletes must compete in the hammer, shot, discus, javelin and heavy weight throw, with points being awarded for the distances achieved in each event. Husband and wife Kevin and Debbie Murch, competing for the first time in this event, were surprised but delighted victors in the M55 and W55 category respectively.
Debbie was very consistent across each of the events and claimed the title with a total point score of 3339. Kevin took the gold with 3541 points and was shocked to narrowly edge out fellow club athlete John Moreland, who took silver with 3483. His victory was largely due to a huge throw in the javelin which improved his British record to 55.10m.
In the M50 category Dave Burrell won the gold medal with outstanding performances in every event to amass a huge total of 3933 points.
Sally Hine competed in the W60 heptathlon and was very pleased to take the gold medal with 4054 points whilst Frank Blackwell took a very hard won bronze in the M60 decathlon scoring 4997 points.
