MIDLAND 12 STAGE ROAD RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS

SUTTON PARK - MARCH 25, 2017

Rugby & Northampton’s men finished in a respectable 21st place at the Midland 12-Stage Road Relay Championship, when the event was held at Sutton Park, Birmingham.

The first four legs consisted of long stages of approximately 5.4 miles with the remaining eight legs over the shorter 5k distance.

Mark Hill ran the opening stage for the club and proved to be the quickest with a time of 30:38 to hand over to Pete Currington in 27th spot. He recorded 31:40 and then Paul Birch was just six seconds faster on leg 3. Lewis Cherry finished the fourth stage on 32:40 to keep the club in the top 30.

Daniel Nikel set the ball rolling for the 5k leg runners with 21:15 and was followed by Robert Male who recorded the fastest R&N time of the day with 16:58.

On stage 7 Joe Lantsbery was timed at 18:20 to hand over to Ben Musgrove who produced a good run of 17:09.

Closing out the team were Joe Childs (18:49), Alistair McDonnell (18:26), Daniel Williams (17:39) and Richard Latimer (17:34).

There was a separate individual race for the U17 Men over 5k and R&N’s Matthew Chronicle won the silver medal with a time of 16:47, which was faster than any athlete in the Senior team.

Unfortunately, the ladies had an incomplete team in the Midland 6-stage event.

Gabby Moriarty recorded 19:22 for the 5k on leg 2, while Tilly Lea was timed at exactly 22 minutes over the same distance.

Long stage runners Helen Jones and Minerva Chesser recorded 40:11 and 40:27 respectively, while Kate Williams was given 42:31.
