Teams test skills in Rugby league

After the internal matches at the start of the season the teams from Hunters have begun to test their skills against other teams in the Rugby League. Hunters 1 consisting of Aseem Sharma, Michal Helis, Shahid Mirza and Wing To took on last season’s Division 1 champions Trinity 1 in a tense match. The first pairing of Aseem and Michal lost to Trinity’s first pair but in a tight 3 game rubber beat the second pair 12-21, 21-18, 21-10 to take Hunters first rubber. Second pairing Shahid and Wing fought hard but lost to both Trinity pairs. In the split pairings Michal & Wing were beaten easily 8-21, 7-21 but the other pairing of Aseem & Shahid battled against injury to beat their opponents 21-15,21-14. The final score of 4-2 to Trinity did not do justice to the closeness of the contest but they were worthy victors. Meanwhile Hunters 3 were taking their campaign out to Lutterworth as they took on Lutterworth 2. The tried and tested pairings of Mark Taylor & Simon Davies along with Ian Francis & Dave Watkin however came up against strong opposition and were unable to capitalise on their winning streak losing the match despite a valiant effort.

In the Coventry league Hunters 1 played their first home match of the season, hosting Stockingford 1 from Nuneaton. David Pugh stepped into the team for the first time, and paired with Michal Helis for the initial rubber. Stockingford’s first pair were very strong, and took the first comfortably. Hunter’s second pair of Lee Rickard and Simon Piercy, and the third pair of Phil Pelton and Shahid Mirza fared better, both winning their opening rubbers. The fourth rubber matched Lee and Simon against Stockingford’s first pair, and despite winning a game, Stockingford took the rubber in the decider. However the next two rubbers went to Hunters, putting Hunters in a 4-2 lead, and needing one more rubber for victory. In the seventh, Phil and Shahid fought a close match, but again Stockingford’s first pair were stronger in the decider, moving the score to 4-3. In the eighth, Michal and David won a tough game, securing the win for Hunters, and Simon and Lee comfortably won the last rubber to make it convincing 6-3 victory on the night.

Hunters 2 took their Coventry league team away to Ernesford Grange 4 and the pairings of David Pugh/Martin Toms, Callum Gallagher/ Mark Loraine & Nat Toms /Antonio Hui faced an enormous challenge against an Ernesford team bolstered by a pair drafted in from the 3rd team. In the end it was a rather one-sided match with Ernesford Grange coming out 8-1 victors although all credit goes to Mark & Callum who picked up the only rubber for Hunters.
