Win keeps Warwickshire top of leaderboard

Warwickshire continued its run of wins by beating Somerset in a hard fought game at Barnwood Bowling Club, Gloucestershire by just 4 shots giving them 18 points to 4 and ensuring that they retain their place at the top of the leader board with just one more game to play.

The highest winning rink was skipped by Maureen Edwards with Sigrid Thomas (Rugby Thornfield), Helen Harris (Stoke) and Pat Bax (Rugby Ladies) who retained a good lead from the start finishing with a winning 24-16.

Janet Scott, with Di Green (both from Sherwood Park), Patsy Tandy (Southam) and Lilian Hope (Welford) romped away to a 13-5 lead by the 10th end but their opponents pulled them back over the next five and were drawing 16-16 by the 15th end.

However, the Warwickshire team was not to be beaten and soared ahead over the next five ends to establish a 25-19 finish.

Close behind were Maureen Tims (Whitnash) with Di Medhurst (Wolvey), Gill Maund (Sherwood Park) and Di Thurlbeck (Lillington) with a score of 24-19.

The only other winning rink was skipped by Moira Parsons with Wendy Holloway and Liz Westell (all from Welford) and Di Wilkinson (Stoke) who had a hard fought match almost level pegging at 10-11 on 15 ends but managing to pick up 3 shots on the 17th and 2 shots on the 20th which helped them to a 17-13 finish.

The two losing rinks skipped by Jenny Corn with Chris Richards and Jane Crawley (all from Lillington) and Elaine Taylor (Wolvey) together with Stratford player Liz Chedgzoy’s team with Kirsty Richards (Bournville), Heather Mills (Rugby Ladies) and Trish Jarvis (Wolvey) both kept their heads and managed to hold their opponents to ensure that overall the team was able to finish with a winning score.

A delighted Warwickshire President, Carol Norton (Stoke), said “Somerset is recognised as a very strong county with several England International players in the side, but my ladies were determined to keep them at bay – and they certainly did me proud.”

Walker Cup

Sadly the successful win against Somerset wasn’t to continue to the following day when Warwickshire played the Walker Cup (Double Rink) against Devon at Henleaze Bowling Club in Gloucestershire.

Maureen Edwards with Sigrid Thomas and England International Jamie-Lea Winch (all from Rugby Thornfield) and Maureen Tims (Whitnash) set off to a good start and were 10-4 up at 10 ends.

But a strong comeback by Devon with 9 shots over the next 5 ends left them just one shot ahead 14-13. However, they kept their cool eventually finished 19-18.

The other team skipped by Jenny Corn (Lillington) with Moira Parsons (Welford), Di Green and Janet Scott (both from Sherwood Park) struggled to start and were 1-7 down at 5 ends.

However 10 shots over the next 5 ends took them ahead 11-7 at 10 ends, but Devon were not to be stopped and pulled back to lead 13-12 at 15 ends with Warwickshire eventually losing 15-17, leaving them losing overall by just one shot – 34-35.
