Round-up by Jenny Corn
Kirsty Richards, Bournville Bowling Club’s young star lived up to her reputation at the County Finals Day at Stoke BC by winning not only the 2 Wood Singles and County Champion of Champions, but also the coveted Championship 4 Wood Singles in an impressive show of bowling.
Carol Norton, County President said: “At only 19 she is certainly a force to be reckoned with and must look forward to an exciting future in the bowling world.”
Earlier in the week Kirsty went out of area to play against Tina Broderick from Wellingborough in the National Champion of Champions which she won comfortably 21-8. She will represent Warwickshire in the Champion of Champions competition at Victoria Park on Tuesday, August 6.
Maureen Edwards with Sigrid Thomas, Pat Lowe and Jamie-Lea Winch (Rugby Thornfield) won the Fours Trophy beating Pat Moore’s team of J Austin, Brenda Carlton and Norma Willey (Three Spires, Coventry) 23-9.
After a hard fought game Janet Scott with Gill Maund and Dianne Green (Sherwood Park) won the Triples eventually beating Jenny Corn, Jacqui Cook and Margaret Grosvenor (Lillington) 18-12.
Jean Petty and Lesley Latham (Norgren) were successful in the Pairs eventually beating Trish Jarvis and Diane Medhurst (Wolvey) 22-18.
In the Benevolent Triples Chris Rathbone with Ann Webb and Mary Adams (Welford) put up a strong fight and were level pegging most of the way but 3 shots on the 10th end put them 9-5 ahead and although they lost 5 shots on the 12th end held their nerve eventually beating Maureen Tims, Di Thurlbeck and Jayne Crawley (Whitnash and Lillington) by just one shot – 13-12.
Although the Under 25 Singles was won by the young International Jamie-Lea Winch (Rugby Thornfield) her opponent, Kay Sabin (Norgren) kept her nerve and was 10-5 up at 9 ends but then the game turned around and Jamie pulled away to eventually win 21-12.
The Under 25 Pairs was no walk over either with Kirsty Richards and Kay Sabin putting Jamie-Lea Winch and Georgina Cooper (Lillington) under considerable pressure in the early stages as they led 11-5 on 10 ends.
But a 4 on end 11 and again on 15 reversed the situation with the score then 18-13 to Jamie and Georgina and although Kirsty and Kay started to pull back again over the last few ends they eventually lost 17-21
The Unbadged Singles proved to be an exciting competition with Cynthia Briggs (Royal Leamington Spa) storming ahead on the first few ends to lead 8-2 on the 5th end.
Although Jayne Henfrey (Lillington) managed to win a few ends she was 16-6 down at 12 ends, but showed her metal and gradually pulled back putting Cynthia under pressure by the 21st end when she was only one shot adrift at 19-18. But Cynthia kept her cool and eventually won 21-18.
