Sports Relief is aimed at getting people to raise money for good causes, both at home and overseas, by participating in some form of sporting activity, writes Alan Jackson.
Rugby Thornfield’s latest gala allowed bowls to play its part. The green was invaded by an army of red all vying to be top of the pile after four rounds of matches. With one set of games completed Speckled Hen held a one point lead, with 8 points, over Them, The Beasts, PJ’s and Noname. As the teams halted for the half-time break to recharge their energy Them and PJ’s had taken the lead both with 14 points. Keith & Youthians (13), Graham’s Girls (12) and Bilton Four (11) completed the top five.
A fully refreshed Them side managed to gain sole ownership of first place with Keith & Youthians and Graham’s Girls one shot behind. Wilkinson, Bilton Four and Noname trailed further behind but were still in with a chance of winning.
With the last round completed Them (Ron Naylor, Les Sims, Chris and Colin Knapp) had held their game to win the gala with 29 points. Graham’s Girls came second on 28 points, while third place went to Bilton Four with 26 points.
The Beasts made a late surge to steal fourth slot with 24 points and finally fifth spot went to Wilkinson and Noname both of whom had 20 points.
Sunday, March 23 is the gala in aid of Arthritis Care and there are still spaces available for the end of season gala on Thursday, April 10, which will be raising much needed funds for the air ambulance.
