Indoor Champion of Champions
On Sunday the cream of England’s young bowlers gathered at Bromsgrove for the inaugural National Champions of Champions at U15 and U18 Singles. All 24 bowlers had previously qualified for the semi-finals and finals of the two age groups by winning their regional competitions throughout the length and breadth of England.
Among the qualifiers was Rugby Thornfield Indoor Bowls Club’s Oliver Fowler, who after three round-robin two-set matches found himself in a three-end tie break with another bowler from his group Craig Massey (Barking,Essex) who had the same number of points. In a tense tie break with the score standing 1–1 to each bowler, the final end was settled by a measure in favour of Oliver Fowler.
So to the final, played over the same format, his opponent from Group 2 was William Moulton (White Oak, Swanley, Kent). In an exciting final, which did not reflect the skills on display by both bowlers, it was a two set victory for William Moulton. Oliver and the other bowlers displayed levels of skill that could be attributed to players much older and more mature. Suffice to say that the future of the sport of indoor bowls remains secure.
Oliver was again presented with the runners-up award, as has happened previously in other competitions, but rest assured that in the very near future this talented sportsman will achieve his ultimate aim of being crowned a champion.
