Playing in memory of chairman Brian Hunt
WVPs first match of the season on May 1 began with a minute’s silence for their Chairman Brian Hunt who had died suddenly a few days previously while playing bowls at Jaguar. They knew it would would be his wish for them to continue their schedule as usual, so acting chairman Mike Gilks and the team travelled to Clementswood, Ilford. Rain stopped play at 15 ends as the green was getting waterlogged. After a lovely meal it was time for home so everyone donned white pedal bin liners and waded through four inches of water to reach the coach and they journeyed home through thunder and lightning and torrential rain. VPs’ highest winning rink comprised Jim Gardner, Bill Faulkner, Graham Taylor and Mike Gilks.
Last Sunday at Banbury Borough Bowls Club the WVPs played Oxfordshire VPs and although they had a most enjoyable afternoon, they could not manage to win, losing 73-93.
Rink scores: David Longdon, Ian Kendall and Roy Swift lost 14-19; Martin Preedy, Bernard Crowther, David Thomas and Brian Mace-Humphries lost 14-15; John Taylor, Don Darby, Tony Ridpath and Peter Vale-Humphries lost 21-22; Neil Morrey, Rex Fox, Gordon Atkinson and Roy Lawrence lost 10-19 and Peter Buggins, Arthur Waugh, Keith Francis and George Palmer lost 14-18.
