Clarke and Holland clear of field
Twenty-one pairs competed in last Tuesday’s duplicate Bridge session, with Graham Clarke & Richard Holland romping home with a score of 69.2% - a full 9 percentage points clear of the field. David Reed & Peter Harris scored 60.2%, with Peter & Vera Iredale close behind on 60.0%.
Twenty-three pairs played on Thursday evening, Graham Lightfoot & Robert Spencer emerging victorious with 64.6%. In their wake, both Peter & Vera Iredale and LIz Edwards & Stuart Warne managed 59.0%.
Eleven pairs contested the outcome on Friday, Val Wormleighton & John Drake finishing 9 percentage points ahead of the competition on 68.1%. Theresa Hillier and Stuart Warne registered 58.9 % and Pam Southern & Anne Pettitt registered 54.2%.
On this deal from Tuesday, East-West’s fortunes depended on establishing a clear understanding of the strengths of each other’s hands during the bidding.

3/10 EW pairs landed judiciously in 6D and made their contract. But 5/10 pairs landed in 6NT or 7NT and failed miserably. There is a complete lack of communication between the hands in play, so EW need to communicate very well in the auction to avoid the road to perdition.
Graham Lightfoot has an early lead in the August master-points competition, on 78; Robert Spencer has 72 and both Peter and Vera Iredale have 69.
