Princethorpe College Girls’ U15 Cricket team stormed to victory in the County Cup Final held at King Edward’s School, Birmingham. Undefeated all season, the girls had to play two matches in a triangular tournament against Bordesley Green Girls’ School and John Wilmott School.
With the format of the game being that everyone had to take a turn at bowling, the first match against BGGS swiftly morphed into a cliff hanger with Princethorpe’s fielding holding strong to enable them to win by just one run.
In the final against John Wilmott the tension racked up to bursting point with Princethorpe Cricket Coach Jon Fitt describing it as ‘the best game of cricket I’ve seen all season.’ Princethorpe needed three runs off the last seven balls but with John Wilmott’s bowler launching some killer spins the home side looked in danger of crumbling.
Captain Bethan Ellis said: “We only needed 48 runs as our fielding had restricted them to 47. They closed down on us so hard that it came to the very last ball with us managing the final run. It was a thrilling end to the tournament making us County Champions.”
Mr Fitt concluded: “The risks the girls took, their speed, batting skills and teamwork made defeat impossible. I won’t deny that they made me sweat but it was superb afternoon’s play.”
