Victory over Byfield A

South Northants Cricket League

Division 1

Willoughby v Byfield ‘A’

BYFIELD ‘A’ 99 All Out 0pts

WILLOUGHBY 100-1 20pts

Willoughby won by 9 wickets

A busy weekend for Willoughby started well with the 1st XI recording a comprehensive victory over league leaders Byfield ‘A’.

The visitors were asked to bat and started off in something of determined fashion with Sam Brough despatching the ball to all parts in the early overs. However after his cavalier start was eventually brought to a close for 68, the Willoughby attack took over as Marcus Fleming took 4 for 19 and Dave Alcock 3 for 21 to go some way to skittling Byfield all out for 99.

Willoughby’s reply then recovered from an early loss with Alcock and Isbar Ali leading the way with unbeaten knocks of 46 and 40 respectively, as the home side cruised to a useful nine wicket victory.

Division 4

Towcestrians v Willoughby ‘A’

TOWCESTRIANS 194-6 20pts

WILLOUGHBY ‘A’ 148-6 7pts

Towcestrians won by 46 runs

The success of the 1st XI could not be matched by the depleted 2nds as they were undone by current runaway leaders Towcestrians.

However, there was some encouragement as the hosts did not have matters all their own way, this having set Willoughby a useful target having been asked to bat.

After a rapid start by the home side, John Gregson pulled back the reins on his way to taking 3 for 55, as Towcestrians skipper Kevin Hawkins made an unbeaten 50 in their 194 for 6.

In reply, stand-in skipper Matt Goss lead from the front with the bat, for after a decent if slightly cautious start, the hosts seemed to have taken the game away from the visitors with some tight bowling with the score at 70 for 6. However some useful late hitting from Goss who finished on a fine 85 not out and Simon Nicholls with 26 not out saw 10-man Willoughby to some respectability closing on 148 for 6, albeit 46 runs runs of victory.

Sunday

County Representative match

Glorious conditions at The Green made the perfect setting for the return of county cricket to Willoughby and a great close game.

After last year’s weather-hit cancellation, Warwickshire County Cricket Board brought their Under 13s to host their encounter with their Staffordshire counterparts and a large crowd throughout the day witnessed an excellent spectacle of junior cricket.

In a 45 over contest, batting first Warwickshire made 143 all out with the last wicket falling in the final over.

In reply, a thrilling finish saw Staffordshire reach their target in the penultimate over, making 146 for 9.

Many thanks to all at WCC who contributed to making the day’s proceedings another huge success.

Rugby and District Under 11 Cup semi-final

Barby v Willoughby

Earlier on Sunday morning, neighbours Barby and Willoughby contested an entertaining Under 11 cup semi-final at Longdown Lane.

In a great advert for local junior cricket, the hosts buoyed by some late hitting by Barby’s Marcus set Willoughby a useful target of 267 for 5 off their 16 overs, with Willoughby’s Harry Brown taking two wickets.

In reply, Willoughby started well and the game was very much in the balance until the closing overs when the visitors edged in front. Brown and then Beno Wiltshire both made 12 as Willoughby closed on 292 for 3 to progress to the Finals Day.

Credit to both young teams for all their individual efforts into making it a great game.
