With no West Midland league action last weekend, Rugby Velo’s racers flocked to Round One of the National Trophy, Britain’s premier national cyclocross series.

Held at Sundorne Leisure Centre, Shrewsbury, significant rains had softened the technical course but not enough to affect the racing.

Whilst National Champion Phil Roach dominated the morning’s Veteran 50+ race, David Garrett led the club’s charge after a decent start taking 18th place, Gary Hipwell followed in 23rd place with Pete Mooney struggling his way to 46th place. Mark Humphreys had a similarly tough race to 58th place in the Veteran 40+ race.

In the afternoon’s Elite race a large field of over sixty riders lined up to race. As reigning National Champion Ian Field rode away to win by over 50 seconds, the club’s representatives found themselves fighting for position throughout the race. Jeremy Hicks managed 41st place, taking positions on the final corner, only nine seconds behind Hicks was James Garrett in 44th place both riders easily managing not to get lapped by the country’s finest riders. Jordan Peacock riding in his first ever trophy took 59th, a lap down on the race’s victor.
