Infant Agility Festival

Whilst many in the sporting world are thinking of Sports Personality of the Year and looking forward to the Olympic year, local youngsters have been enjoying their own first major sporting event.

Over 350 children from local infant schools Bawnmore Infants, Binley Woods Primary, Paddox Primary, St Oswalds Primary, Hillmorton Primary and St Andrews Benn Primary School attended Infant Agility festivals at Rugby’s Ken Marriott Leisure Centre last week. For most, this will have been their first school sports event staged away from their own school and involving other schools - perhaps the start of an Olympic journey, hopefully the beginning of a lifelong love of sport.

The children each completed seven events, each aptly named and reflecting the key skills included within the innovative Infant Agility programme.

These included Launcher, Runner, Bouncer, Catcher, Thrower, Skipper and Pitcher. The Eastern Warwickshire School Sport Partnership has assisted local schools, providing training and free equipment to ensure that these key skills can be practised and developed within school prior to the youngsters attending a Festival event.

The broad range of skills included in the programme provides a great starting point for any future sporting champion even though 2012 will definitely be coming too soon for these six and seven year olds!
