Rugby Golf Club’s challenge for the Mid Warwickshire League title is now at an end after the 18-week competition.
Week 15 saw Rugby lose to Hearsall 4-2 with Brian McGovern and Rob Rankine providing the two wins, and week 16 away at Leamington saw a 5-1 victory to the home side, again with Brian McGovern being the only win.
Week 17 was away again, this time at Nuneaton which resulted in another defeat for the Rugby side with the exception again of Brian McGovern and Rob Rankine; Alex Bagnall secured a half to bring the result of 3.5 to 2.5 to Nuneaton.
The final week, week 18, enabled Rugby to secure a win against Whitefields with a 5.5 to 0.5 result. Dale Marson, Matt Bell, Alex Bagnall, Brian McGovern and Rob Rankine all provided wins whilst Shay Meadwell secured a half for the final result.
Brian McGovern finished joint first with Sam Foster from Hearsall in the individual winner’s competition over the 18 weeks, having played 17 matches and returning 13.5 points. The Mid Warwickshire League Finals Day is at Rugby Golf Club on September 17.
n The Gent’s August Extra Medal was won by John Amer with a net 63 with Michael Kowal just one shot behind in second. Third place was taken by Adrian Stock with a net 65.
n 121 competitors, including 71 visitors, played in the Seniors open on August 3. Scoring was high and with 3 home players returning 43 points a count back was required to decide the top 3 places. Dave Thorpe was the eventual winner with John Bradley in second and Colin Smith in third.
n The Ladies Section played their Handicap Cup competition, a 36 hole medal competition over 2 days. Round 1 saw Sue Davis return a net 67, followed by Caroline Brown with a net 68 and both Debbie Harrad and Sheila Wragg scored a net 70.
Sue Davis continued her good form and in round 2 returned a net 68 with Sheila Wragg scoring a net 69 and again 2 ladies Debbie Harrad and Jean Lewin returned a net 71. With her 2 excellent medal rounds it is Sue Davis who is this year’s Handicap Cup winner.
n The Parent and Offspring Competition was won by father and son team David and Robbie Winkle with a net 64.
Second was Gavin Folwell and Dave Hughes with a net 66.2 and Dave and Anthony Izzard came in third with net 67.
n The Gent’s EGB stableford competition returned exceptionally high scoring with the top 9 competitors scoring 40 or more points. The winner was Robbie Winkle with 42, second was George Taylor with 41, and with 7 players returning 40, a count back was required to decide third position.
Jonathan Watts and Jozef Lewandowski had not only the same back 9 score of 22 points, but also the same back 6 and back 3 scores of 15 and 7 respectively. So it was down to the last hole and having made a par at the 18th hole with a shot to give him 3 points it was Jonathan Watts who took the third place spot.
n The Ladies played another EWGA medal competition with Sheila Wragg scoring a net 66, Jean Lewin came second with a net 74 and Diane Webster third with net 75.
n The Gents August Medal saw 90 competitors, with the overall winner being decided on a count back between Karl Walker, Paul McNally and Pete McIntosh who eventually finished in that order all scoring net 61.
Division one was won by pete McIntosh, with Matt Bell in second with a net 62 and third Mark Ridley with net 64. Division two was won by Paul McNally, with Julian Leckie in second with a net 67 and third place Keith Oag returned a net 68.
Division 3 was won by overall winner Karl Walker with Junior Captain Cameron Snook in second place with net 68. Third place was decided on a count back between George Taylor and Mick Walshe who returned a net 68 and finished in that order.
n The ladies section played the Rene Almey and Daily Mail Foursomes this week and the pairing of Judith Pegler and Margaret Webb came first scoring a net 63.5 and in second place was Jean Lewin and Velda Hall with net 69.
