One of Rugby Golf Club’s most prestigious matches of the year, the Captain v Past Captains Match, took place on Saturday at the Clifton Road course.

Some 20 Past Captain’s accepted the invitation by the Immediate Past Captain, Mark Ridley, and were paired to play a fourball-betterball match against the Captain, Chris Moran’s team selected from the rest of the Club.

Played in beautiful weather and with the course in tremendous condition the Past Captains took to their task and succeeded in winning 7 matches to 3. Traditionally it is a foregone conclusion that the Captain’s Team win by a substantial margin, their team being selected from Rugby’s crème-de-la-crème golfers.

In contrast, the Past Captains Team comprising Captains dating back to 1975, including Hedley Wilson now 86 years young, and an average team age of 67 years have never won this competition in living memory. Incidentally Hedley proceeded to win his match with his partner Steve Watts, Club Secretary, 6 and 5!

Celebrations continued well into the evening with another three Captains joining the match supper hosted by the Captain. It is expected that the Past Captains will do equally well next year providing the team receives similar inspiration provided by this year’s Past Captain’s Captain Mark Ridley. This is a result that will be recorded in the annals of the Club’s history books and remembered for a very, very long time…
