Busy week at Clifton Road course
The Gentlemen’s Extra Stableford was played on Tuesday, August 21. A field of 36 members played during the day. Neil Tooby scored a excellent total of 42 points, not far behind was Joe Rainbow with 40 points and close on his heels Paul Smith on 39 points.
It was a fine day for the start of the Ladies President’s Vase competition on Wednesday. Club President, Barry Pegler, was there to greet the ladies as they started and meet them half way round with a glass of Pimm’s! It is easy to see why this is a popular competition with 35 ladies taking part. There was a torrential downpour during play but even this did not dampen anyone’s spirits. The winner of the best front 9 was Sue Graham with 20 points and best back 9 was Debbie Harrad with 17 points. Third place in the competition went to Di Reid with 36 points, 2nd to Abi Mortimer-Lane with 37 points and the winner of the President’s Vase 2012 was the President’s wife, Judith Pegler, with 38 points. Thanks go to the Club President who generously donated all the prizes – and the Pimm’s – for the day.
Rugby Avon league team visited Henley on Sunday. Rugby was playing for the runners up spot. Rugby needed to win by at least 4 & 2 to secure second place, with five pairs in we were 3 ½ to 1 ½ Rugby captain Simon Dayshe with partner Gavin Folwell secured the result required by winning their game 5 & 4 with the final result 4 ½ to 1 ½.
The Victory Cup was contested on Sunday with 83 competitors taking part. The winner of the day was Samuel Bourne with a exceptional net score of 58 playing off a handicap of 20. Second was Dan Chidlow with a net 63 coming in also with a 63 but a worse back nine was Robbie Winkle. The low scoring was possibly justified by the wonderful condition of the greens and golf course.
The August Bank Holiday Mixed Competition was held at Rugby Golf Club with 20 pairs taking part. The format was betterball Stableford. The competition started in good conditions but the wind and rain affected those pairs playing in the last groups making the playing conditions difficult.
The winners of this year’s competition were Judith Pegler and Adie Stock with a great score of 45 points. They retained the Trophy from last year. Three pairs scored 39 points and runners up were decided on count back. Caroline Brown and Keith Oag were in 2nd place and Claire Scott and Brian McGovern in 3rd. Unfortunately, Di and George Reid just missed out on countback. Adie Stock, Judith Pegler and Barry Pegler.
