CAPTION: Fred Fearn, head coach for the Staffordshire County Golf Partnership with Warwickshire players (top, left to right) Alex Wilson (Rugby GC), Dan Seymour (Copt Heath GC), Joe Norton (Shirley GC), Lawrence Johnson (The Warwickshire) (Bottom row, left to right) Rocco Luca (Leam Valley Golf Centre), Tom Cleaton (Rugby GC), Jamie Johnson (The Warwickshire) and Yousif Ali (Olton GC).
PROMISING young golfers from five counties played together for the first time in a special competition to cap a season’s hard work.
All the players in the Midlands Golf Tournament were members of the County Academy Programme in their home counties.
Warwickshire players included Rugby Golf Club’s Alex Wilson, who won the Age 13 section and Tomm Cleaton, who was third in the Age 12 competition.
Overall the Warwickshire boys’ team were runners-up by a single stroke, behind Shropshire & Herefordshire.
The County Academy is aimed at young players who show promise, but who may not be members of clubs or even have a handicap. It gives them the opportunity to develop their skills at a series of coaching sessions run by PGA qualified professionals.
It is organised by the county golf partnership, a combination of the union, association and PGA.
The 18-hole medal competition involving 60 young players was held at Little Aston Golf Club in Staffordshire.
