Rugby Golf Club’s annual Home Internatonals were held last Saturday with the course looking resplendent on a warm, sunny spring afternoon.
Eighty golfers played in teams of ten pairs for England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, all posting a stableford betterball score for their team, a colourful sight with some deciding to get kitted out in national colours ranging from tartan trews to morris dancing outfits.
Club Captain Duncan Snook and Club vice captain Mark Ridley led Scotland and Wales respectively, with Chris Moran and Kevin McNally in charge of the England and Ireland teams. They were ably supported by their vice captains for the day - Keith Oag, Richard Wlodarczyk, Kevin Sargent and Karl Walker. Played in tremendous spirit, the golf was of a high standard too with Ireland and Wales ending up level on 353 points.
After many checks and rechecks the tie-break rules had to be consulted and with reference to the ‘best worst’ card Ireland finally triumphed by one point. While accepting the wooden spoon for Scotland, Duncan Snook awarded the Home International trophy to Ireland’s captain Kevin McNally - his team will now be going for a hat-trick of wins in 2015.
A hugely enjoyable day - with over 60 golfers staying on for the evening meal with some healthy banter and some fun speeches - Kevin McNally again taking the plaudits commanding the room in his own inimitable style!
