Annual match welcomes back former club professional David Sutherland

Since 2008 Rugby Golf Club has staged an annual match between teams captained by home professional David Quinn, and David Sutherland, who was professional at the club from the 60s through to the 90s. Two teams of 14 did battle on a lovely late summer’s afternoon in pursuit of ‘The Trowel’ - which was used to lay the foundations of the clubhouse in the 1920s - now fashioned into an impressive trophy.
In the lead match it was a close fought battle between David Quinn, partnered by Club Captain Duncan Snook against David Sutherland, partnered by Club President Adrian Evans. With both sides showing fine form it was Messrs Quinn and Snook who finally triumphed on the 17th green.
This triggered a landslide victory for the home professional in the remaining pairings with a resounding score of 6-1.
Many stories and memories were swapped during a hugely enjoyable day’s golf culminating with Duncan Snook handing over ‘The Trowel’ to David Quinn, while reminding David Sutherland of the time he paid his first ever green fee to him - in 1975!
This match has become a wonderful tradition enjoyed by members old and new, and an occasion to welcome back a great friend and servant to the Clifton Road course.
