There were no games for the men’s 1st and 2nd XI or Ladies 1sts last weekend, but a few fixtures did beat the weather to play their first games since the festive break.

Cannock 4

REWHC Men’s 3rd XI 1

Rugby performed well showing excellent work rate against an exceptionally competent Cannock side. MOM to Rob Best and DOD to Dave Morgan.

Belper 3

REWHC Men’s 4th XI 1

This was a game best quickly forgotten as the 4ths threw away their unbeaten record for the season, losing 3-1 to the previously winless Belper 5ths. Despite going into the match fully prepared for the opposition’s strategy, Rugby went one down to a breakaway goal within three minutes of the start due, to the first of many abject passes that went straight to an opposition player.

A combination of this and a strange lack of desire pervaded the remainder of the game. Early in the second half Rugby pulled one back to level the scores, as Stuart Morgan drilled one in from the top of the ‘D’ and they briefly threatened to get a result, but two more instances of woeful defending in the last five minutes left Belper to celebrate a deserved victory.

Ken - Mark Huskinson, MoM - Stuart Morgan

Belper 3

REWHC Men’s 5th XI 0

All three goals were conceded in the first half, and despite improving for the second half with more passes and attacking opportunities, Rugby were unable to get back in the game. Lots of strong play from the juniors in the team, Thomas Webb, Andrew Walker and Tom Robinson.

Cov & North Warks 1

REWHC Men’s 6th XI 2

Great passing play from the start upset the opposition defence, leading to Huw Williams scoring from the opposition’s deflection over their own keeper. Rugby continued to press the ball well, with James Harrison, Mike Mourant and Tom Carter distributing the ball in midfield. Unfortunately a slight slip led to Cov scoring at the end of the first half. In the second half, counter attacking down the wings from Max S, Greg Sinnet and Will Hedderwick, created several chances, Jonny Bowering’s effort hitting the post. With 10 minutes to go Matt Rush broke the defence and found Ryan Hibberd to score the winner.

MOM Dave Reay, DOD Tom Carter.
