A strong win will give Rugby confidence before their league match against Cannock this coming Saturday, but there is still a lot to do if they are going to compete at this level. Goals from Darshane, C Odwell, Sewell, two own goals following balls in from Harding and a surprise hat-trick from D Odwell.

It was the Phil Dickinson show as Rugby put in a good display in their final friendly before the league resumes next week against Cannock. 3 goals from Dickinson will hopefully give the team confidence to pick up some points and get themselves out of the bottom 4.

REWHC Men’s 5th XI 1

Rugby were up against a strong team from Sutton Coldfield with lots of experience and young players that could run for Britain. Rugby had lots of opportunities but could only convert the one, Stuart Chaplin going round the keeper to finish. A brilliant performance by Dave Reay in goal and selfless save from Simon Allan’s thumb, that may have resulted in a break. MOM Reay DOD Paul Mourant
REWHC Men’s 6th XI 2
Sutton Coldfield 2

Men’s 6th XI came from 2-0 down to beat Sutton Coldfield 3-2. The opposition provided a tough test for a team containing a number of 2013/1 debutants, including Alex Winton and David Heathcote, the former of which getting an assist and the latter creating and scoring a goal. The goals were ultimately scored by Heathcote, Duffin and Bowering, and a number of chances were missed to put the game to bed before that, including a deflection from Bowering that hit the top of the goal post. Overall an excellent start to the calendar year, hopefully with the best yet to come.

Too much Christmas turkey and too many missed chances saw the 7s fall second best to Sutton Coldfield.

On Saturday Rugby and EW Hockey Club’s two badgers sides played each other in the first return fixture of the season. The match was played without adults and was closely contested by the two junior sides. Badgers 1 took the lead with a near post finish from Ben Bucknall and went further ahead through a strong strike from Ben Cooper. However, Badgers 2 narrowed the lead following a cross from Izzie Bower that Tristan Birch converted with a neat touch from just outside the left post. In the second half following an injury to Josh Dixon in Badgers 2, Badgers 1 were able to control the game with their one-man advantage and Ben Bucknall scored a further goal almost identical to his first resulting in a final score of Badgers (1) 3 Badgers (2) 1.
