4ths v 5ths ended with a 2-2 draw down at Hartfield. 5ths were easily the dominating force to begin with, scoring two goals in quick succession around the 10 minute mark, the first from Chris Dickinson slipping the ball in at the near post and the second a cross from myself to Stu Chaplin, finished with a reverse stick flick.
Around 30 minutes in 4ths had a succession of short corners which were ended by the ball slipping out beyond the stop, Chris Dickinson careering back and taking the ball from Mark Huskinson, not realising Keith Slaughter was coming from the front at full tilt, resulting in both players on the ground and Chris with a bleeding head. Keith was taken to St. Cross after having a 5-minute lie down, but thankfully nothing appears too serious, with Chris playing by the end and Keith showing up to show his support. 4ths then managed to score two in the final two minutes of the half from Dave Manning and Dave Renards. The second half was well contested with good long balls from 5ths and pressing play from 4ths, leaving the game at 2-2 and Ryan Hibberdappealing for every other step he took on the pitch.
MotM to Max S and DotD to Chris Dickinson for taking out two of our own players in one go.
Rugby 4ths were slow out of the blocks in this club derby game and were punished by a strong high pressing Rugby 5ths team who grasped the game by the scruff of the neck and applied early pressure.
Rugby 5ths broke with a goal scored from a speculative cross which somehow ended up in the back of the net. Minutes later Rugby 4ths were again caught out when a player was given too much room in the D and slid the ball into the bottom corner of the goal. The game continued at its high intensity until a clash of heads from two Rugby 5ths players caused a temporary halt.
Rugby 4ths used this time to regroup and refocus. When play resumed a quick goal came for Rugby 4ths as the calm and composed Manno got the ball with space in the D and waited for the goalie to commit before chipping over him into the back of the net. Rugby 4ths kept the momentum and pressure on with Dave R breaking down the wing using his stick wizardry too bamboozle the defence and the goalie to slide the ball in at the near post. Bringing the game back level for the break.
The second half started with the same intensity with Rugby 4ths reproducing some of the passing and composure they are more used too. The game was end to end with Rugby 4ths trying to build attacks and Rugby 5ths forever looking dangerous on the counter with long balls up to their strikers, but the Rugby 4ths defence of Pete, Rob and Andy kept their patience and shape to stamp out much of the danger.
The pressure from Rugby 4ths continued but unfortunately the chances did not come to the strikers although they remained resilient and sniffed out any clear cut opportunities. The game finished with honours even in a hard battled 2-2 draw.
