Lichfield 7

REWHC Men’s 1st XI 2

Sponsored by Webb Ellis

Saturday saw the 1st team travel to Lichfield with the hope of continuing recent strong performances.

Although Rugby started poorly they seemed to be playing themselves into the game. This was soon halted after a poor officials’ decision which led to the first Lichfield goal.

Rugby kept trying but soon found themselves another two goals down. A glimmer of hope just before half time saw Oszyjczyk scoring from a penalty corner. The second half wasn’t much better for the visitors, conceding a further four goals.

A second goal for Rugby came via Chris Graham with the game ending 7-2. Rugby shall try to finish the season with two final victories.

Sutton Coldfield 2

REWHC Men’s 3rd XI 3

Rugby had to win to stay in the league. After twice going behind they battled hard and scrapped for those important three points. Goals from Suraj Taylor, Will Taylor and Gaz Unett. It sets up a final game thriller against Beeston to decide who goes down.

REWHC Men’s 4th XI 3

Northampton Saints 0

Sponsored by Bowie Lockwood: It was a game where both sides were happy to give possession away, but there was only ever going to be one winner. Rugby’s all-attack formation wasn’t going to be denied.

REWHC Men’s 5th XI 0

Northampton Saints 0

Sponsored by Vicarage Farm: An uneventful game, profligacy being the key theme, with Rugby unable to finish a number of 1 v 1s. However the point almost guarantees Rugby’s safety. MOM Simon Allan, DOD Callum Mackay.

REWHC Men’s 7th XI 0

The match was over in the first half with the students having way too much energy, although Rugby did manage to draw the second half 0-0. MOM was Tom Webb in goal,

who had to work very hard to keep the first-half score down and then keep a second-half clean sheet. Lots of exceptionally brilliant goalkeeping. DOD Tim Rowe with too many reasons to list. Crunch game next week at home to Melton.

Leamington 2nds HC 7

REWHC Ladies 1st XI 1

Sponsored by The National Motorcycle Museum, Windmill Village and The Manor Hotel

The first half was an exciting and determined effort against the home team. After a quick first goal from Leamington, Rugby were quick to respond to the pressure. With good defending from Rachel Major, Emily Billing and Jo Watling, Rugby ensured that Leamington could not break down the defences for a second time. With some great passing by the mid-fielders, Maddy Thomas, Gill Harrison and Emily Meikle, Rugby Ladies had a few plays onto the goal; with an equalising goal being scored by Caroline Emmett from a penalty corner, leaving the score 1-1 at half time.

During the second half, Leamington came back stronger putting significant pressure onto Rugby, and although some chances were created by Megan Plackett, Amy Green and Man of the Match, Nadine Bell; Rugby could not find the back of the net.

REWHC Ladies 2nd XI 1

REWHC Ladies 3rd XI 0

Old Sills 1

A good performance from 11 players against top of the league. Great effort from all and perhaps unlucky not to draw. MOM Isobel Bower.

REWHC Badgers A 1

Market Harborough 1

Sponsored by Astute Services and PAB Coventry ltd

Rugby started very slowly and seemed to lack a determination to compete. As a result they soon found themselves one down. A harsh word at half time seemed to wake them up and soon found that they could compete and indeed dominate spells with quick and accurate passing.

As Rugby mounted the pressure, Murphy’s lightening reactions capitalised on a defensive mistake to bring the score to one a piece. Ollifent made a fine diving save to cut out a cross and keep the score all square to the final whistle.

Old Sills 5

REWHC Badgers B 1

Sponsored by Astute Services and PAB Coventry ltd

This was always going to be a tough encounter against an older and more experienced Sills side. Rugby found themselves under pressure from the start but defended well and started to exert some offensive pressure themselves. Sills opened the scoring half way through the first half with an unstoppable shot into the top right corner.

The score line was extended early in the second half but Hewitt brought the deficit back to one with a fine reverse stick shot low into the bottom corner. Late in the half Rugby began to run out of steam and Sills capitalised on this with some excellent attacking moves, resulting in three more goals. The score line didn’t quite reflect the efforts that Rugby’s Badgers put in and special mentions should go to Bower, Wallace, Harry in goal, and Dixon.
