The Olympic Torch comes to Rugby on Monday and the whole week sees a host of celebrations at the athletics track next to the Ken Marriott Leisure Centre, home of Rugby and Northampton AC.

Torch Week is launched on Saturday with a two hour free Star Track athletics taster session for children aged between 7 and 14, between 9.30 and 11.30am.

There are 100 free places on offer.

To register, email your children’s name, date of birth and your contact number to randn.enquiry@virginmedia.com, stating ‘Star Track Taster’.

The free places are available to the first 100 applicants. Place confirmation by email.

n After the torch has gone, Thursday, July 5 is a special day for athletics in Rugby with four famous Olympian athletes in the town.

In the afternoon school children in Years 1 and 2 are invited to the track with their schools to participate in the Torch Challenge; a series of sprint and distance races, relays and athletics based throws, agility and jumps challenges.

After school between 4 and 6pm children in Year 3 to 7 are invited to the track for their similar event.

n Specially designed 2012 medals will go to age group event winners and goody bags and commemorative certificates for all registered participants.

n The club are excited to announce that David Moorcroft 5000m world record holder, Katharine Merry, Olympic 400m Bronze medalist who started her athletics career at Rugby and later on Linford Christie, Olympic 100m Champion will be coming to visit.

n The club will be talent spotting on the day and offering a week’s free Star Track Summer Holiday Athletics Programme for ten talented newcomers.

n SCHOOLS: To register your Year 1 or 2 class email Janet Wright on randn.enquiry@virginmedia.com stating school, contact name, phone number and number of children and email for confirmation.

n INDIVIDUALS: To register your children for the 4-6pm event; email Janet Wright on randn.enquiry@virginmedia.com stating children’s name, date of birth, phone number and email for confirmation.

Number of entries will be unfortunately be restricted.

n Entry to the afternoon is free. Spectators welcome. Shelter provided and refreshments available to purchase.

n Rugby and Northampton AC have a thriving Junior Section winning the Rugby Sports Awards for Junior Team of the Year and Northampton and Northamptonshire Team of the Year Awards for 2011. Last weekend the team won the Midlands Premier East Division of the Young Athletes League (see page 90) sealing their place in the Regional Finals in July.

The club welcomes children aged 7+ at its Saturday track club between 9.30 and 10.30am to come and have a go at athletics.
