Matthew Outhwaite, a pupil at Lawrence sheriff School and member of Rugby Table Tennis Club, had a successful weekend in the Schools’ Table Tennis International Competition held at Lilleshall.
His performance in the English Schools’ national finals at Doncaster in April earned him selection to represent England for the third consecutive year in this event.
He teamed up with Igor Morais, a pupil at West London Academy as England ‘A’ in the intermediate (Under 16) boys category.
In the group stages they beat Guernsey ‘A’, Scotland ‘B’, Wales ‘B’ and Ireland to progress to the semi final where they played a strong Wales ‘A’ side.
However they rose to the challenge and secured a win with a crucial result in the doubles to meet Ireland again in the final, following their victory over England ‘B’ in the other semi- final.
Matthew and Igor both played extremely well to secure the gold medal beating Ireland 3-1.
