‘Awesome’ - that was how Rugby Swimming Club’s Sophie Randle described the experience of swimming in the London 2012 Aquatic Centre last week.
Sophie, a member of the England under 15 synchronised swimming squad, was selected as part of a team of eight swimmers to perform in the ‘One Year to the Olympics’ celebration.
Swimming 20 minutes before Tom Daley performed his ‘live’ dive on national television to declare the centre officially open, the girls experienced the atmosphere of demonstrating their competition routine in front of an appreciative 1,200 strong crowd.
As well as meeting Tom Daley, Sophie was thrilled to meet other famed Olympians such as Mark Foster and Tessa Sanderson. Everyone involved in the day could only wonder what performing in front of a home crowd of 17,000 will actually be like in 12 months time!
Sophie will be back in competitive action this week when she flies to Milan to compete in the 2011 Comen Cup.
This event represents the major under 15 synchronised swimming competition of the year and will include the top-ranked synchro nations such as Russia, Canada and Spain.
This will be Sophie’s second Comen Cup appearance as England look to improve on last year’s placings.
Sophie’s progression continues to be mapped by Rugby’s Head Synchro Coach, Hannah Dudley and Sophie continues to receive the support of DC Leisure through the availability of facilities at Ken Marriott Leisure Centre.
n Synchro combines the stamina of swimming with the grace and artistry of gymnastics and dance
