Club scoops medals in British Sprint and Middle Distance Championships

Many club members who travelled down to compete in the British Sprint and Middle Distance championships were rewarded with podium places. The glorious weather on Saturday at the sprint heats and final races around the Universities of Sussex and Brighton produced some very fast times.

Mike Hampton M65 achieved his first ever British individual championship win and was awarded a gold medal for running 1.67k in 13.24mins in the sprint final, 47 seconds ahead of his nearest rival. Also winning gold was Lesley Ross W45 in the A Final in 16.29mins on the 2.04k course.

Silver medals were presented to Jane Halliday W50 2.04k 16.54mins and Hilary Simpson W70 1.6k 22.21mins both of whom qualified for the A Final. Third places was achieved by Anne Straube W35 2.19k 23.37mins and Aimee Morse W14 1.6k 14.23mins. Barry Elkington M55 was 4th on the 1.98k course in 15.11mins and son Matthew M16 was also 4th 2.53k 18.02mins closely followed by Hamish Rogers M16 18.31mins.

Club members performed well in the B Finals: 1st places awarded to Harrison McCartney M14 and Elizabeth Furness W55, 2nd – Bruce Bryant M50 and Sue Bicknell W65, 3rd – Matt Halliday M20 on the Elite 2.370k in 13.30mins, Sophie Kirk W20 on the Elite 1.85k in 14.13mins and 4th – Jill Emmerson W45 on the 1.65k in 18.47mins.

On the sunny Sunday club members continued to excel and were celebrating in style winning a total of 11 medals in the British Middle Distance Orienteering Championships. The event, attracting over 800 competitors from around the UK, was staged on the Worth Hills, near Crawley, Surrey and congratulations go to the 5 new British Champions winning their age class: Lesley Ross W45 winning the 4.08k course in 31.57mins making it a double by adding this to her sprint championship title on the previous day, Harrison McCartney M14 2.8k in 18.40mins, Aimee Morse W14 2.8k 24.10mins, Sheila Carey W65 3.21k in 37.31mins and Hilary Simpson W70 2.31k in 31.11mins.

On the podium winning silver medals were Matthew Elkington M16 5k in 30.51mins, Trevor Simpson M70 4.06k 46.31mins, Rachel Emmerson W16 4.06k 34.55mins and Anne Straube W35 5.01k 44.26mins. Bronze medallists: Will Gardner M18Elite 6.24k 36.53mins and Sue Bicknell W65 3.21k 49.30mins. Matt Halliday M20E 6.24k 35.46mins and Mike Hampton M65 4.06k 37.56mins were 4th and Sophie Kirk W20E 5.05k 38.05mins 5th.

This weekend the club will be welcoming junior club members to the Woodcote, Leek Wootton event on Saturday 16 April, 10.30 – 12noon. All junior members and new youngsters 5 – 18 who would like to try orienteering around the park and woods will be given introductory training.
