Congratulations to club juniors: Aimee Morse W14, Rachel Emmerson W16, Harrison McCartney M14 and Matt Elkington M16 who have been selected to represent England at the Home Internationals joining 20 other juniors from other English orienteering clubs.
Julie Emmerson W16 and Will Gardner M18 are reserves for the event which will be staged in Northern Ireland during the autumn. The club juniors were selected based on performances at major competitions around the UK this spring, including the British Championships.
Weekly Wednesday summer evening events are very popular and some attract over 100 participants. The club is pleased that many newcomers, particularly families are taking up the sport. At Memorial Park, Coventry Sam Hart M12 was 1st on the short 2k course in 14.53mins, Xiaoying Li W21 2nd 15.47mins and Catherine Bailey W8 3rd in 19.48mins. On the medium 4.5k course Paul Taylor M35 was 1st in 27.54mins, Barry Elkington M55 2nd in 28.01mins and Paul Furness M55 3rd in 30.34mins. Matt Halliday M20 was 1st on the long 6.2k course in 29.57mins ahead of sister Jess Halliday W21 37.18 and Thomas Honniball M21 3rd in 37.51mins.
Haywood, Baddesley Clinton was well attended and the tricky woodland courses with high undergrowth were challenging. Xiaoying Li W21 came 1st on the Yellow 1.7k short course in 23.01mins followed by new orienteer Jack Coathup M12 25.56mins and Alexander Hague M10 27.46mins. On the medium length 4.2k course Paul Furness M55 was 1st in 47.59mins, Liz Phillips W45 2nd 51.38mins and Suzanne Humphries W45 3rd 51.49mins. A great run by Dan Halliday M21 of 37.56mins on the long 5.2k course put him well ahead of Chris McCartney M40 43.11mins and Phil Clark M40 45.53mins.
Octavian Droobers will be welcoming new and experienced orienteers to three Wednesday evening events during August: 10th Ryton Pools, 17th Brueton Park, Solihull and 24th Coundon Hall Park, Coventry. Individuals and families can experience running, walking and navigating around the parks using a specially drawn large scale map. The club will have courses, from 1.5k to 6k, for all ages, 5 – 85 years, and abilities. Help will be provided and start times are from 6.00 – 7.30pm.
