CALL UP FOR OD MEMBERS
Congratulations to club member Will Gardner M21 who has been selected to run for GB at the Euromeeting 2014. He will join a team of seven athletes and compete in Gothenburg, Sweden on 22 – 24 August.
Nine OD juniors have been selected to represent the West Midlands in the annual Junior Inter Regional Championships event to be held in the Lake District on 26 and 27 September. They will be competing against all the English regions and Scotland, Wales and Ireland. We wish Aimee Morse, Rhiannon Cope, Nathan Lawson, Stephen Elkington, Heather Rogers, Harrison McCartney, Will Heaton, Alfie Bullus and Callum Pearman every success.
Julie Emmerson W18, representing GB in the Junior World Championships held in Bulgaria last week, had a great run in the Middle Distance 3.1km ‘A’ final with 130m of climb. After running through the forests in the mountains she finished in very creditable 11th place out of 60 competitors taking 32.52mins, only 4mins behind the winner from Switzerland.
At the Ryton Pools Country Park event, organised by Liz Phillips and Bruce Bryant, the warm sunshine attracted many competitors, especially families, and top runners were Luke Cherry M10 on the Yellow 2.1km course taking 19.05mins, Tom Chapple M10 20.47mins and new member Joel Taylor M10 22.16mins. On the Medium 3.3km course new member Paul Taylor M35 was 1st in 21.52mins ahead of Liam Chapple M45 26.45mins and Carys James W21 from South Midlands 28.07mins. Harrison McCartney M16 won the Long 7km race taking 44.16mins, Alistair Powell M35 was 2nd in 45.48mins and Chris McCartney M45 3rd in 48.32mins.
The next local event is at Pooley Fields Country Park, Polesworth, on Wednesday 13 August, with starts from 6pm until 7.30pm. Full details about start times and costs will be on the club website. Runners and walkers of all ages, 5 – 85 years, and abilities will be welcome to come along to try out this outdoor adventure navigation sport. Help is available to all newcomers.
