Tournament played in friendly spirit

The annual ladies rounders tournament took place last Sunday at Rugby School. Only five teams from the league entered, with other teams from the league unable to find sufficient players due to the holidays. The tournament was played on a round robin basis, with 20 good balls for each team in a game. With the five teams being long established, the players were well known to each other, games were played in a serious but very friendly spirit and a very relaxed style.

Games were won or lost on odd rounders scored, but the two contenders that emerged as unbeaten were the Stiff Joints and the Oddballs. With their game against each other being scheduled as the last game, there was strong anticipation of a good game by the rest of the players who all stayed to watch.

Stiff Joints won the toss and elected to field. Oddballs started reasonably well with a half rounder from Charlotte Brayson and Debbie Smith and a full rounder from Tracey Lewis but the rest of the team were being put out or failing to score. The second round of hitting Rebecca Thomas and Laura Curley added a further rounder each, and Debbie Smith a further half.

The team were well now depleted, and only a further half from Debbie gave the team a total of five. Stiff Joints were fairly optimistic as 5 rounders was not an unreasonable target. However, Emily Janczak the main batter failed to score, and a number of players although hitting well were caught out in the out field with well taken catches. Laura Croft scored an excellent full rounder and then added a further half rounder and Mary Berrill also added two half rounders, and Mo Maunder a half.

Unfortunately the 20 good balls were insufficient to make the five rounders required and the Stiff Joints finished with three rounders. So Oddballs were declared winners of the tournament.

Further prizes went to Emily Janczak and Laura Croft, both from Stiff Joints for scoring the most rounders in the tournament. Becci Clish (Rabble) and Julie Carter (Mad Batters) received prizes for the best catches of the tournament.

A mixed tournament is set to take place on Sunday, August 25. Interested in playing? contact Chris Cox for further details (01788) 521460.
